Celebrating Independence Day at Home with My Newborn Brother

Today is Indonesia’s Independence Day. If I went to the city center, I would probably see a big parade with lots of people celebrating, waving flags, and watching colorful performances. But instead, I stayed home.
This year is different for me. Just two days ago, my little brother was born, and my mom is still resting at home. I don’t mind not going to see the parade because being here with them feels just as special. I still remember the first time I saw my baby brother—so tiny, so soft. He sleeps most of the time, and when he wakes up, he only cries or drinks milk. But even though he doesn’t do much yet, I already love having him around.
In the morning, my dad raised the Indonesian flag in our front yard. We stood in silence for a moment, just like they do in the big ceremonies. I may be small, but I understand that today is important. My teacher said that on this day, many years ago, our country became free. People fought so hard for us to have the life we have now.
Even though I didn’t go outside to celebrate with everyone else, I still feel proud and happy. I spent the day with my family, watching over my little brother, listening to my mom tell stories, and sometimes peeking out the window to see if any neighborhood kids were playing.
Maybe next year, I will join the big celebrations. But for now, I am happy being here, welcoming my brother into this world, in this country that we call home.
